What is DNSSEC Public Signing Keys?

webmail hosting

DNSSEC Public Signing Key helps protect Internet against malicious acts who can spoof or manipulate a domain by forging DNS record signatures. This is achieved by adding a security layer on top of DNS and storing signatures cryptographically in DNS record types such as A. AAAA. MX.

What is DNSSEC?

Domain Name System has been the backbone of Internet connectivity for many decades. It also forms the basis of many new protocols requiring secure communication. Transport Layer Security (TLS), encryption keys, and zones with cryptographic signatures are all examples.

It took six messages, and lots of data transfer to change a zone's public key in the olden days. The DNS was not able to scale to the size and complexity of the Internet.

Fortunately, IETF modified DNSSEC to fix this problem. DNSSEC bis uses "delegation signing (DS)," resource records, instead of the six messages. These DS resources publish a fingerprint for the public KSK of the parent zone. Resolvers will then verify that the fingerprint matches with the DS resource records of the children zone in order to authenticate the validity of the key pair.

How does dnssec work?

One of the most important aspects of dnssec is how it adds a layer of trust to DNS records. This layer of trust ensures that any response received from a valid DNS resolver is the answer that corresponds to the authoritative state of the records in question.

Resolvers can validate the authenticity of zones by checking their associated signatures and calculating the signatures of its own copies of these tokens. This is an important step in making DNSSEC more reliable. It prevents a man-in the-middle attack from injecting false records into the DNSSEC network to trick the resolution process.

The signatures have been encapsulated into a "reverse-redistribution-service identity" (RRSIG), which includes timestamps, limiting replay attack. These RRSIG timestamps, unlike DNS TTL values which are relative to the time of sending records, are absolute. The signatures need to be regularly re-signed, and then distributed to secondary servers. Otherwise they are rejected by validating resolutions.

Registrants will need to be able to use DNSSEC. This includes the ability for them upload DS records or DS records that have been signed, as well as manage key rollovers. This requirement can be met by webhosting services, DNS management services and registrars.
